The coil is the one part of a vape you keep replacing, and it sits behind almost every complaint you hear: burnt taste, flat flavour, leaking, weak vapour. Understand your coil and you get better flavour out of the same device. Ignore it and you end up buying new devices when the device was never the problem.<\/p>\n\n
A coil is a metal wire wrapped around cotton, or a perforated metal strip surrounded by cotton. The cotton soaks up e-liquid, the metal heats up when current passes through it from the battery, and the liquid held in the cotton turns into vapour.<\/p>\n\n
So three things have to stay in balance: the metal that heats, the cotton that delivers the liquid, and the wicking ports that let liquid reach the cotton. Break any one of them \u2014 dry cotton, narrow ports with a thick e-liquid, metal heating faster than the cotton can resupply \u2014 and the result is always the same: a burnt taste.<\/p>\n\n
The metal itself varies. Kanthal, stainless steel and nichrome alloys are the common ones, and each heats and cools at a slightly different pace. That is why two coils with the same ohm rating can feel noticeably different.<\/p>\n\n
A traditional coil is wire wound into a spiral. Its contact area with the cotton is limited, and it heats from the inside outwards, so it needs a moment before the heat spreads evenly.<\/p>\n\n
A mesh coil is a perforated metal strip, like a fine grid. It has far more surface area and touches the cotton along its entire length, so it heats faster and more evenly. In practice: clearer flavour from the first puff, a quicker response when you fire, and usually a longer life, because there are no hot spots scorching the cotton in one place.<\/p>\n\n
There are three formats: a pod with a built-in coil that cannot be removed, so you replace the whole pod; an empty pod that takes a separate replaceable coil; and a tank that accepts coils from a specific family. The difference is practical \u2014 with a built-in coil you can only change resistance if the brand sells that pod in more than one ohm rating, whereas replaceable coils and tanks let you move between ohm ranges on the same device.<\/p>\n\n
The ohm rating (\u03a9) is the coil’s electrical resistance. It is not a quality score and it is not a power rating \u2014 it simply tells you how much the coil resists the flow of current.<\/p>\n\n
The higher the resistance, the less current flows at the same voltage, so the coil heats more slowly and produces less vapour. The lower the resistance, the more current flows, so it heats faster and produces more vapour. That is why MTL coils sit above 1 ohm and DTL coils sit below it.<\/p>\n\n
It is not that low resistance “demands” wattage. A low-resistance coil is usually a mesh coil with more metal surface and more cotton, and a bigger surface needs more energy to heat evenly. Run it too low and only part of it gets hot, which is exactly why the flavour goes flat, the vapour looks weak, and the coil feels broken when it is not.<\/p>\n\n
The reverse is just as true. Push a high-resistance coil with a small heating surface too hard and the heat concentrates in a narrow area, scorching the cotton before fresh liquid can reach it. That is why the wattage range printed on the coil is the second most important number after the resistance.<\/p>\n\n
Coils normally carry three pieces of information on the body, and each has a job:<\/p>\n\n
If your device sets the power automatically, that printed range is still your reference whenever a draw feels off. If your device has manual wattage, the range is a hard boundary.<\/p>\n\n
